“I felt ugly, I felt like sh*t for months” says Vidya Balan as she recounts facing multiple rejections!

There’s no denying that Vidya Balan is one of the finest actors we have today. The star is known to play characters which are strong and empowering and has carved a niche for herself in Bollywood which few can boast of.

Recently while talking to a popular entertainment portal, the actor opened up about her struggling period and how the rejections affected her. She revealed that she was supposed to star in 12 south films but got replaced in all.  Vidya shared, “There was a lot of rejection down South. There were a lot of films signed, which were not literally signed on paper but there were verbal commitments, but I got replaced in each one of them. And I remember it was heart breaking.”

She further added, “There was a Tamil film I was doing and I got thrown out of the film. I remember my parents had come with me because they were so worried for me. I had really begun to fade. So my parents flew to Chennai with me. We went to the producer’s office and he showed us the clippings from the film and said, ‘Just look at her, does she look like a heroine.’ He said ‘I was not in favour of taking her at all, it was the director who insisted.’ They had already replaced me. When we got to hear, my father spoke to the producer and said can we at least meet you in Chennai because they were wondering what is it that’s going wrong.”

Talking about the impact the rejections had on her, Vidya opened up, “I remember I felt ugly. I felt like sh*t and for months, which felt like 6 months I am not sure, but I don’t think I looked at myself in the mirror. I didn’t like what I saw because I thought I was ugly. For the longest time, I hadn’t forgiven that man, but thankfully today I can say with my hand on my heart that I have. Thanks to that I realized that I have to love and accept myself the way I am.”

Vidya also recalled a casting couch incident she faced early on. She said, “One day I remember I was in Chennai and this director came to meet me. I said let’s sit in the coffee shop and he said lets go to your room. He kept insisting that he wants to talk to me and that there are too many people here. So I left the door open and he left within five minutes. He didn’t say anything, he didn’t make a move. This incident suddenly struck me today when I’m talking about this.”

The actor credited all her tough experiences as the reason for her being so confident in her skin today.
