I didn’t use her talent at all: Karan Johar on launching Alia Bhatt in Bollywood

Karan Johar and Alia Bhatt’s bond goes back a long way. The Kuch Kuch Hota Hai filmmaker introduced a gem of an actor, Alia Bhatt, to the world with ‘Student Of The Year’. Ever since he took Alia under his wings he has been her godfather and a constant guiding star of her professional as well as personal life too! However, in a shocking turn of events, the ace director agrees to the fact that he has not been able to utilize Alia’s talent to a great extent despite launching her in Bollywood with his film.

Karan believes Imtiaz Ali’s Highway in which people finally noticed Alia’s potential as a powerful performer and received critical acclaim for her performance as her professional launch instead of the college drama. Talking about it in a video interview with columnist Rajeev Masand, Karan said, “She wasn’t used for her talent at all. In many ways, her emotional launch is Student of the Year but her real professional launch is Imtiaz Ali’s Highway. The way he nurtured her as an actor, the way he put her out there is something I didn’t do at all. I always spotted that there was something about her but I didn’t use her talent at all. I actually don’t feel I full-fledged ever directed Alia the way I would like to do.”

Karan is all set to once again direct Alia in his upcoming multi-starrer period drama Takht which also stars Ranveer Singh, Vicky Kaushal, Kareena Kapoor, Janhvi Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar and Anil Kapoor. The filmmaker also expressed his wish to make a standalone film with her in the future. Speaking about Alia’s role in Takht, Karan said, “Even Takht is an ensemble, she has a solid part in a way that she is extremely beautiful. It is one of my favourite tracks in the film but I still feel believe she and I have a film to make. A film that we can be known for. I haven’t really leveraged this whole lot of talent that we know.”

Karan and Alia also revealed what they are binge-watching amid the Coronavirus crisis. Alia has started watching classic Hollywood films like Tom Hanks’ Cast Away, a German web series Dark and Inside Bill Gates Brain while Karan apart from reading different scripts and working on them is watching Netflix’s ‘Sex Education 2’, ‘Elite’ and a documentary ‘Tiger King’. KJo also revealed that he is watching some Telugu movies so that he could make some potential remake.
